Throughout his career, Rob focused on helping businesses grow online through Organic Search (SEO), Paid Search (PPC), media buying, conversion optimization, and website performance. He worked directly with the mechanics of how businesses attract customers, generate leads, and increase sales.
To stay current as search and marketing evolved, Rob attended industry conferences, including PubCon. That experience shaped one of Ratals' core philosophies: SEO should be built into the platform itself, not added later through plugins. Every page in Ratals includes complete control over metadata, canonical URLs, redirects, structured content, and search indexing as part of the core CMS.
In 2005, Rob recognized a problem that many businesses still face today: building a website was only one piece of running a company. Businesses often had to combine a CMS, an ecommerce platform, accounting software, inventory management, and countless integrations just to operate.
The idea behind Ratals was simple - one platform should be able to build the website and run the business behind it. That vision became the foundation of Ratals: a free CMS that naturally expands into Commerce and then a full ERP, all without changing systems, migrating data, or rebuilding the business as it grows.
As Rob continued working with businesses, another challenge became increasingly clear. Many SaaS platforms limited how much companies could customize or truly own their software, while charging ongoing fees through transaction percentages, per-seat licensing, or both.
That experience led to one of Ratals' defining decisions: the CMS core would remain free and open-source under the Apache 2.0 license, while the complete platform would run on infrastructure owned and controlled by the business itself. The CMS source code is publicly available on GitHub, allowing anyone to review the architecture before adopting the platform.
As businesses grow, Commerce, ERP, and AI are licensed at flat monthly rates with no transaction fees and no per-seat licensing, allowing costs to remain predictable instead of increasing simply because a business becomes more successful.
Building the platform he envisioned required more than understanding marketing - it required writing the software itself. Rob transitioned into software engineering and built Ratals from the ground up, designing every layer around long-term maintainability, transparency, and performance.
Ratals is written in raw PHP and MySQL without relying on third-party application frameworks. That architectural choice keeps the codebase understandable, reduces unnecessary dependencies, and allows businesses to fully inspect, customize, and extend the platform they control. Ratals has been actively developed by Rob since day one and continues to evolve through ongoing improvements and new capabilities. Updates are delivered directly through the built-in software update system inside the admin area, allowing core files and database changes to be installed with a single click.
